Methamphetamine has a similar effect to amphetamine. However, because methamphetamine crosses the blood-brain barrier more quickly and, in turn, takes much longer to break down, the effect is stronger and the high lasts longer. The effect of a common single dose of amphetamine lasts about six to eight hours. In the case of methamphetamine, the intoxication lasts up to 16 hours. Methamphetamine exerts its great effect in the central nervous system mainly by interfering with the brain metabolism of the neurotransmittersSerotonin and dopamine. Effects: Strong physical arousal, hunger and need for sleep are suppressed, dilation of the pupils, increased sex drive, disinhibition, elevated self-esteem, euphoria, increased urge to talk ("babble flash")
